Good afternoon,

We serve Nebraska and Iowa. There are minimally 15 nursing homes in Iowa closing as well. I have been in contact with both associations. Serving adults in both states take an exception to policy submission. It is very difficult. The Nebraska Home Care Association is working diligently on Medicaid increases as well. MCOs can be the barrier. Centene is the big one, labeled: Nebraska Total Care and Iowa Total Care.

Yesterday was Home Care Day at the Capitol. We had 47 registered to attend; either the virtual option or in-person. While there were some no-shows, we also had some walk-ins. I would guess at least 60%, maybe more were first-timers! We hope to continue to grow this event, now that we are back in-person. We are waiting for all of the reports, but as I saw members throughout the afternoon, they were reporting some good meetings! Thank you to those who were able to join us!

We had decided that I wouldn’t travel to the NAHC events this year, but they are offering a virtual option for the March on Washington this year. I’d love to have some board members join me for congressional meetings. Would you consider joining me for the virtual visits on March 28th? There is also an evening  briefing on March 27. Please let me know if you are willing to participate and we’ll coordinate your registration.

MDH worked on statute updates and proposed eliminating exit conferences in the language. Following negotiations, we compromised with language that would allow them to do the exit virtually. That amendment was passed during a hearing last night.

One of our members brought forward a bill that calls for the same base rate increase MHCA has in our bill, but just includes HCN. They had a big turn-out for a press conference before the hearing yesterday and had an powerful hearing, complete with two adorable kiddos. I have emailed Sen Hoffman, thanking him for that bill and reminding him of the importance we ensure access to care for all ages.

Operational/Governance

You will have seen the email that I sent yesterday regarding the board election. My apologies for this error! For those that have not yet voted, I do hope you will submit your ballot!

We are working to develop and integrate our strategic activities into the format Mary Kay Delvo utilizes and look forward to sharing that with you at the April meeting. I will say that strategic planning in the midst of a busy legislative session is not ideal!

We wrapped up our official renewal season, with some disappointment. 15 members have not renewed and are not l likely to change their mind. 7 others have not yet paid, but we are confident will renew. Dan will share more at the board meeting. We will welcome your input in how to get members to be more responsive when we discuss this in April. One frustration has been their lack of replying to Dan’s communications. We spent significant staff resources the last couple of weeks on these renewals. He will work on building more relationships which will hopefully help to some degree.

Other

I was asked to serve on the U of M’s Health Services Management Advisory Board. I’m hoping that, along with my service on the Bethel and St. Thomas Advisory Boards, will expand our connections and allow for more collaboration.

A new service concept has arisen in rural Nebraska where nursing homes are closing. This is an interesting idea and I’m curious to learn how it evolves. Home care Co-op

Spring is around the corner. I hope you are enjoying the warmer temps and sunshine!
