With last week’s general election as well as subsequent leadership announcements from all four of Minnesota’s legislative caucuses, a clearer picture is emerging of the upcoming 2023 Minnesota legislative session. Below is a brief summary of what is known so far as well as what decisions remain outstanding.

The results of last week’s general election in Minnesota produced a “trifecta” for the Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) party. When the 2023 Minnesota legislative session begins on Tuesday January 3^rd, the MN House will be controlled by 70 DFL members compared to the GOP’s 64, the MN Senate will be in DFL control by 34-33, and all five constitutional officers (Governor, Lt. Governor, Auditor, Attorney General and Secretary of State) will remain DFL.

It was announced late last week that the recently elected members of the MN House DFL caucus have selected Representative Melissa Hortman (Brooklyn Park) as Speaker of the House.

Members of the MN House GOP caucus have chosen Representative Lisa Demuth (Cold Spring) as their Minority Leader.

On the Senate side, the MN Senate DFL caucus designated Senator Kari Dziedzic (Minneapolis) as their Majority Leader.

And lastly, the MN Senate GOP caucus elected Senator Mark Johnson (East Grand Forks) as their Minority Leader.

Between now and the start of the 2023 Minnesota legislative session further information will be released about membership and Chairpersons of the various legislative committees. We will share that information as it is released.
