USE CAUTION - EXTERNAL EMAIL
I’ll be out of the office next week so I’m sending a brief update. Dan is getting acclimated and looking forward to his conversation with you all.
Advocacy
The Governor’s office and Senator Abeler have both shared that they are continuing to advocate for a special session and requested more grassroots advocacy from home care. We asked our Grassroots Champions who are assigned to members of the Health and Human Services Committees to send another message, calling for negotiations and returning for a special session. It’s still unclear whether any progress is being made. At this point, I’m hearing that a big barrier is the child care negotiations. Sen Abeler has asked me how lower we can go and still have a positive impact for you. He’s continuing to be a home care champion, for sure!!
On the national level, I understand a bill is being drafted to reform/repeal the budget neutrality provision – the rationale for CMS’ reduction in rates. We are waiting to hear how we can help with the advocacy but know that WE WILL COUNT ON YOU! I expected a call today, but it may happen next week so it’s possible you’ll hear from Brianna/Dan, asking you to communicate with your congresspeople.
Leadership
MHCA has made DEI a priority and I have continued to seek development opportunities for me and our members. The MN Leadership Council of Aging is covering the cost of the council members (that includes me) participation in an Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) cohort. The organization has been deep in discussion regarding our ability to individually and collectively navigate cultural differences. The IDI provides training, toolkits and supports needed to enhance an individual’s intercultural competency. The program includes reports and coaching and helps you build an individual blueprint for personal growth. While my fee is covered, ALL are welcome to join us!! I encourage you to take a look at this opportunity which starts in September, and consider registering yourself and/or others in your organization! I’d love to have you join me in the journey! I do wish I could include all of the staff but it’s significantly above our professional development budget and, as you know, we remain in the red. I hope to bring information back to the team.
I have also been considering how we might help develop the leadership skills and opportunities of our BIPOC members and look forward to some dialogue on that at a future board meeting.
Other
I am seeking other stakeholder guests for our future board meetings. I have an invite out to Stratis Health and have asked for pharmacist suggestions. I received two ideas: Sterling Pharmacy and a pharmacist at Ecumen, one of our members (they have nursing homes and home care). Do any of you work with Sterling? I welcome input on your preference.
I hope you are all enjoying this summer weather!
Kind Regards,
Kathy Messerli
