Subject: MHCA staff bonus

Hi Committee,

After reviewing the draft 2023 financials for MHCA, it looks like due to our investment income MHCA will not end the year in the red. Total operating bottom line (tentative loss of $33, 610) and the net income (tentatively in the black: $37,403) this year due to such an incredible year with investment income ($63,547). We budgeted 2023 for a $64,965 net loss, and I believe we ended 2022 with a loss. Due to the net gain of $37, 403 I am requesting this committee consider a discretionary bonus for MHCA staff. The policy states: “Should the Executive Director identify some large line item savings that were circumstantial and not affected by staff, that savings will not be included in the bonus calculations (e.g. staff shortage).” This means that we won’t be paying out bonuses for 2023 because the only reason we are in the black is due to the investment income.

Paying out a bonus this year would set a precedence, and there is always a risk in that. However, investing in current staff is far more cost effective than replacing staff as I know you are all aware.

I am suggesting $500 each staff member, and $1000 for director a total of $3,000. Not quite 10% of the net gain.

If you could please respond with an “in favor” or “not in favor” by the end of the day that would really be appreciated.
