Technically, anyone can “refer” to hospice, including family members and patients. Also, you do not need to obtain an “order” from the MD or NP/PA to begin hospice. The requirement is that you
obtain written or verbal certification from your hospice physician and the attending physician, if the patient has chosen an attending.
NP’s and PA’s cannot certify hospice- either verbally or in writing. If the patient has chosen an NP/PA as their attending, the only person you would need to obtain certification from in that
situation would be the hospice physician.

Subject: [External Mail] Referring to Hospice
Can a Nurse Practitioner/Physician’s Assistant do REFERRALS
to Hospice?
We were thinking this had changed and had to come from a Medical Dr?
Does anyone know where we could find this answer? I’ve been trying to search but can’t find any info on this.
Thanks
Becky
