I do the following to verify PECOS status:
- Access CMS PECOS site:
https://www.cms.gov/medicare/enrollment-renewal/providers-suppliers/chain-ownership-system-pecos/ordering-certifying
- Click the “Access the Ordering & Certifying Files” button
- Click the “View Data” button
- In the search field, enter provider’s
NPI# and search (can search by name, but NPI is quicker/more precise)
- If MD is enrolled and able to certify for Hospice services, there must be a “Y” in the
HOSPICE column
Tip: You can access older files to verify if a provider was enrolled in PECOS at an earlier date if needed. To do this, from main Order and Referring page, instead of clicking ‘View Data’, scroll down towards
the bottom of the Ordering & Certifying Files page, and just below the Page Last Modified date you should see a spot that says ‘Public Use File (free)’ and below that, dates available. You can click ‘show more’ to go back further in time.
Below example is for Home Health, but same should apply for Hospice once this requirement goes into effect.
Determine date that needs to verified (typically date patient started on service) and find data file on or before that date to verify if provider was enrolled at that time, and click to access that
file. Use search to locate provider in question (recommend search by NPI#) and verify the were authorized to order HHA services at that time (need to have a “Y” in the HHA column)
