I also work in professional clinic billing and being Minnesota is a no fault state, you would use the person's TPL insurance that was
involved in the accident that you are providing services for. You definitely run the chance of medicare denying for other coverage. It doesn't matter their comfort level (sorry to be blunt) on giving you their insurance/vehicle information. Their vehicle
insurance should be the payers until benefits are exhausted.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Medicare and motor vehicle accident
Good morning,
We have a patient that has Medicare coverage nothing primary over it. But they had a very recent accident in a family member's vehicle. They don't feel comfortable giving the motor vehicle insurance numbers to us because it wasn't their vehicle that they were
driving. How would you handle a situation like this when the reason for services is due to the accident. The family is wondering if we can bill Medicare first and then later on bill the motor vehicle insurance. I don't think that sounds like something we should
be doing since it's related to the accident. Any suggestions? Thanks!
